GREEN GARDENS: TIPS AND TRICKS TO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE APPEALING

“The times, they are a-changin’”, it’s suddenly hip to have a well-maintained garden at home (in contrast to the image of a sweet old lady with a floppy sun hat on digging around in her . back yard); so how do we do that, while simultaneously pursuing the worthy goal of minimal waste and maximum efficacy?

Jumping right into it, you don’t actually need to buy one-use items! You can use milk jugs, egg cartons, red solo cups (just clean out the beverage you used for beer pong), and yogurt cups to start your seedlings off – and they can be reused! Keeping it green and efficient, consider collecting rain water (for those rare times when it rains in the San Fernando Valley), and use that extra water to care for your plants; make sure to place the containers near where the water comes out (downspouts?). Finally, don’t waste water when watering your plants; it is the antithesis of a green garden. Particularly living in the Sherman Oaks, Encino, or Studio City where it can get incredibly hot; watering in the middle of the day is a foolish idea. It is so foolish, in fact, that many advisory groups strongly recommend that you run your sprinklers (if you’re one of those
people) after the temperature drops below a certain point; again, this is to avoid waste – the short version of this is that heat makes water evaporate, so your plants aren’t getting as much water, so you have to use more water to keep them alive. The solution? Water in the morning or the evening when you aren’t sweating buckets just walking to and from your house.

Finally, the American Dream involves having your own company and having others do the nitty gritty work for you, and your garden is no different. Consider planting a hefty amount of lavender, catmint, calendula, butterfly flower, sunflowers, and lantana; bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies really like that stuff…. And they pollinate your plants for you (which makes life a whole lot easier for you, the green gardener).

At the Chernov Team we understand that knowledge is power. Having a beautiful garden in your backyard has numerous positive impacts, but this is a real estate blog, and we are interested in helping you sell your home for as much as possible as quickly as possible. The fact of the matter is that you only get one first impression, one chance to convince a would-be buyer that your home will be there new home. A gorgeous garden can go a long way towards convincing would be purchasers that this is their dream home, which of course incentivizes them to spend more on it – because they want it. At the Chernov Team we know that whoever comes to the table most prepared leaves with the most, and the Chernov Team always leaves the table with the most.
