Size Matters, But Here Are A Few Tricks to Make Your Kitchen Look Bigger

Let’s be fair, neither you nor any of your friends have ever said “I want a house with a tiny kitchen.” In fact, a house could be perfect in every aspect except for the kitchen, and that teeny kitchen could sink your sale. If you are trying to sell a home with a cramped kitchen area in Studio City, fear not! The Chernov Team is here to help with a few easy tricks to make that mini-kitchen appear far larger.

1. White Color Palettes Are Your Tiny Kitchen’s Friend

As you may already know, white is unlike any other shade of color in that it can open an entire room. You probably remember learning a lesson about what colors actually are during grade school, and probably remember that white reflects all colors within the spectrum; the practical effect of a room filled with a color that reflects the entire color spectrum of light is to add depth and dimension to the kitchen. Using a white color palette operates in a similar manner as utilizing mirrors to open a room up. Speaking of using mirrors to open a room up.

2. Use Mirrors to Open the Room Up

Every interior designer has the old mirror trick in their back pocket, which they use to open small rooms. A teeny kitchen will immediately feel larger as the light reflects around the room.

3. We’ve Already Established That Your Kitchen Is Small, So Let’s Avoid Bulky Cabinets

It may sound like common sense, but if your kitchen is already short on space… why on earth would you waste that space with bulky, square, space wasters like cabinets? Use floating shelves instead! An important thing to keep in mind is you lose one of the benefits of closed cabinets with floating shelves; everything needs to be organized scrupulously on the floating shelves, lest it look like an ogre resides nearby (with cabinets, you have a little more leeway, unless you have very rude house guests who just rummage around your stuff).

4. Hey, Your Kitchen is Still Small, Let’s Keep the Space Open, Right?

Just because your kitchen is small, doesn’t mean you can’t have an island; in fact, why do you think those gigantic kitchens with an island look so gigantic in the first place? If you guessed open space, you win today’s trivia. Sure, you won’t have the massive island you see on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but your house isn’t as big as theirs, and we can only work with what we have.

5. There Is a Pattern Here, Your Tiny Kitchen Doesn’t Have A Lot of Floor Space… Your Walls Look Pretty Spacious Though Right?

While it is asinine and a little mean (at this point) to keep harping on exactly how small your kitchen is, we do it because we care. The fact of the matter is your tiny kitchen simply does not have the square footage to allow you to waste a single inch. However, your walls are likely the same height as the walls in larger kitchens, and you can certainly capitalize on that.

Mount a wall rack for pots and pans, since we already told you to avoid bulky cabinets. Keep in mind that you should avoid having the pots and pans hanging from the ceiling like some weird torturer’s chamber with the tools hanging in plain sight; the wall is a good place for pots and pans.

If you have read this far, we applaud your resolve to better your small kitchen. Here at the Chernov Team we pride ourselves on giving individuals (client or not) useful information about the real estate market and home improvement in general, and hope this article helps you enhance the appearance of your small kitchen.
